Oligochaeta is a class of animals in the phylum Annelida, which is made up of many types of aquatic and terrestrial worms and including all of the various earthworms. They are hermaphroditic. An important reproductive structure is a clitellum which is a permanent structure and it is the characteristic feature of oligochaetes. Clitellum is a conspicuously swollen area about one-third of the way from the anterior end of the worm that generates mucus to aid in sperm transfer from one worm to another, it also forms a cocoon inside which fertilisation occurs.
