The doctor in the story was devoted to his patient and took his job seriously. He was ready to do anything to save the life of his patient- even act as if his patient was going to make a complete recovery even if he was unsure of it himself. He treated him not only with the help of medical science but also through the positive thinking that he instills in his patient; through belief and faith. I think the doctor's behavior, though odd, was to the benefit of his patient. Though his treatment was unorthodox, he was a better doctor for it.
