The Plantation Corporation of Kerala started growing cashew plantations around the year 1975 in the district of Kasargod. To prevent the tea mosquito bug from infecting the plantation, they used endosulfan as the prime pesticide. This caused severe detrimental diseases to humans and animals. Cows in the region gave malformed births, the local wildlife and fish started migrating, and those that couldn't, died. People started developing cancers, endocrine or hormonal dysfunctions and other fatal diseases. Due to these detrimental effects, endosulfan was banned by the Stockholm Convention in 2011, and eventually the governments of Karnataka and Kerala banned it permanently. Another harmful pesticide used was DDT. It is an organochlorine which was once used widely in the United States, but due to its detrimental effectsthrough biomagnification, it was banned by the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
