When an aromatic primary amine is treated with $(N a N O_{2} + H C l)$ acid at $0 - 5^{o} C$ , diazonium salts are obtained. These diazonium salts are highly reactive in nature. Upon warming with water, these diazonium salts finally hydrolyze to phenol. Phenol can also be obtained from diazonium salts by treating it with dilute acids. The reaction is as follows:
