Photoautotrophic organisms may or may not perform photosynthesis with release of molecular oxygen. Molecular oxygen is released when a bacteria uses water molecule as the electron donor. Some bacteria use hydrogen sulphide as electron donor and release molecular sulphur gas as the byproduct.
