Question

Phy - Q 3
3. Usha swims in a 90 m long pool. She covers 180 m in one minute by swimming from one end to the other and back along the same straight path. Find the average speed and average velocity of Usha.

Solution

Dear Student,

1. Average speed is calculated as the ratio of total distance travelled to time taken

Here Distance = 180 m and Total Time taken = 1 min = 60 s

Hence Average Speed of Usha = 180/60 = 3 m/s

2. Average velocity is calculated as the ratio of total displacement to time taken.

Here the net displacement = 0, as Usha reaches the starting point while covering 180 m and thus there is no change in position.

Thus the average velocity = 0/60 = 0
