The pattern in which the leaves are arranged on the stem or its branches is called phyllotaxy. The leaves are arranged in such a way that all of them get proper sunlight.
There are 3 types of phyllotaxy- Alternate, opposite and whorled phyllotaxy.
Alternate phyllotaxy- In this type of phyllotaxy only one leaf is present at a single node and the leaves are arranged in an alternate fashion. E.g. Hibiscus, mustard, sunflower
Opposite phyllotaxy - A pair of leaves arise at each node on opposite side and the leaves generally lie opposite to each other at each node. E.g. Guava, Calotropis
Whorled phyllotaxy- More than two leaves arise at each node form a whorl or circle. The leaves of one whorl alternate the leaves of the next successive whorl. E.g. Alstonia, Nerium
