In 1517, Martin Luther, a German monk who disagreed with the ways the church, presented 95 theses criticising the rituals and practices of the Roman Catholic Church. He nailed a printed copy on the door of the Wittenberg Church. People protested against the Roman Catholic Church and the Papal supremacy and distanced themselves from Roman Catholicism. These people who ‘protested’ the ways of the Catholic Church were called the ‘Protestants’. And this led to the beginning of the Protestant Reformation. Luther translated the New Testament of the Bible to German, and some 5,000 copies were sold. What was earlier with just the priests and the clergy reached the commoners. People were now free to read and interpret for themselves.
