Thorns are used for defence against browsers by plants; example Bougainvillea. Stilt roots are present in monocotyledonous plants like Maize to provide mechanical support. These roots arise from the nodes of the stem closer to the soil and help it anchor into the soil in addition to the underground fibrous root system. They do not help in absorption of water and minerals. Lenticels are openings present in stems that have undergone secondary growth for exchange of gases. They are also present on pneumatophores or breathing roots present in mangrove plants. Rhizomes like in Ginger help in vegetative propagation of the plant.
