Solution

The correct option is B Grows/accumulates in the region where production of oxygen is optimum

Aerobic bacteria can grow only in the presence of oxygen. In his experiment, T.W. Engelmann used a prism to split light into its component colours of different wavelengths.

The light of different wavelengths was directed towards green algae-Cladophora placed in a suspension of aerobic bacteria. After a while, he observed that, the parts of the algae that were illuminated with red and blue wavelengths of light had greater accumulation of aerobic bacteria when compared to the other parts.

He inferred that accumulation of bacteria was due to the evolution of oxygen from the algae. Oxygen was released as a by-product of photosynthesis which in turn was used by the aerobic bacteria.

This helped him to conclude that photosynthesis was optimum when performed in red and blue wavelengths of light when compared to the other wavelengths of light.

A monochromator is used to separate colour components of light. A prism can also be used to act as a monochromator. Hence, (a) and (d) describe the role of prism and not of the aerobic bacteria.

Aerobic bacteria was used in this experiment since it could grow in the oxygen producing regions. Hence, option (c) can be eliminated since it brings about the exact opposite idea.
