Pituitary gland is an endocrine gland. It is small protrusion in hypothalamus. It is the size of the pea weighing about 0.5 grams in humans. It is composed of three lobes anterior, intermediate and posterior.
It produces hormones that control other glands and helps in the normal functioning of the body like growth development and metabolism.
The hormone released from pituitary gland helps in maintaining the function of thyroid glands,sex organs, temperature regulations and pain reliefs, some aspects of pregnancy, childbirth and nursing.
Hence it is called as master gland.
