Question

Places a and b are 200 km apart on a highway.one car starts from a and another from b at the same time.if the cars travel in the same direction at different speed, they meet in 10 hours. Find the speed of the two cars.

Open in App
Solution

LET THE SPEED OF 1 CAR BE X & OTHER BE Y
DIST COVERED BY A IN 10 HR. = 10 * X = 10X
DIST COVERED BY B IN 10 HR = 10Y
A/Q WHEN THEY TRAVEL IN SAME DIRECTION
THEN 10X - 10Y = 200 => X -Y =20 .....(!)
NOW, DIST COVERED BY A IN 1 HR = X
DIST COVERED BY B IN 1 HR = Y
WHEN THEY TRAVEL TOWARDS EACH OTHER
THEN
A/Q, X +Y =200 ......(2)
NOW (!) - (2) = ( X -Y)-( X +Y)=20 - 200
=> 2Y = 180 HENCE Y = 90 KM /HR.
AND X= 20 +Y =110 KM/HR
