Plants are active photosynthesisers i.e., they take up carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and using the energy from sunlight and water they convert it into carbohydrate molecules. During this process, plants produce oxygen. They utilise the oxygen produced for respiration. Since they need comparitively lesser oxygen than what they produce, they do not need to take up more oxygen from the atmosphere.
