The sexual reproduction of fungi has three phases, namely plasmogamy, karyogamy, and meiosis. There is a fusion of two protoplasts that carries together two compatible nuclei within the same cell in plasmogamy. This pair of nuclei is named as a dikaryon (resulting cell becomes bi-nucleate). So, it is the fusion of two haploid cells without nuclear fusion.

In the case of lower fungi, plasmogamy is immediately followed by karyogamy. But in higher fungi, these two processes may be parted in time.
