Solution

Base :

Any substance that can produce hydroxide ions when dissolved in water is known as a base.
Substance + Water → Metal ion + OH-
For example: NaOH + H2O → Na+ + OH-

Physical properties of bases:

  • Bases are bitter to taste, soapy to touch.
  • Bases are good conductors of electricity in aqueous solution. In aqueous solution, they release ions, which conduct electricity.
  • Bases turns red litmus to blue, methyl orange to yellow, phenolphthalein to pink, liberates heat on dilution.
Example of base : NaOH, KOH etc

Salts:

Salts are the ionic compounds generally formed as a result of neutralization of an acid with a base. They can be acidic, basic or neutral.
Examples:
Acidic salts: Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3)
Basic salts: Magnesium chloride (MgCl2)
Neutral salts: Sodium chloride (NaCl)
