Question

Please tell me whether this idea will work.

It is about using water as a fuel.

Using electrolysis we can separate hydrogen and oxygen from water.

So can we combine this and used as a fuel.

Or hydrogen on its own is a good fuel.

Where all can this idea be used?

Solution

Yes the idea of generating power through hydrogen is already in use in developed countries.
Let us discuss the limitations alone so that you can concentrate on this and improve your project idea.

Limitation in using hydrogen as fuel in car.
  1. Hydrogen is highly combustible. The reaction of hydrogen with oxygen is explosion reaction. So if we didn't take proper safety measures there will be a fatal accident.
  2. Cost of storing hydrogen and transporting is very high. Still research is going on in this field. Scientists are working to use metal hydrides to generate hydrogen at the spot without any risk of accidents.
  3. The cost per Kg of hydrogen is much higher than cost per Kg of other hydrocarbons like petrol, diesal. Similarly energy released per Kg of hydrogen is much lower than hydrocarbons. (The energy released per mole of hydrogen is higher than hydrocarbons. That is different aspect)
Limitations on electrolysis of water
  1. High energy is required to electrolyse the water and generate hydrogen gas. If we are using some other source like coal, petroleum etc to generate electricity, the cost of hydrogen will be very higher. So we need to concentrate more on using the solar energy for electrolysis.
