Functionality is the number of functional groups attached to the parent chain.

In adipic acid - (CH₂)₄(COOH)₂ - two carboxylic groups exist. Hence functionality is 2.

Similarly in butadiene, 2 alkene groups exist. So functionality is 2.

But for ethene and propene, only one alkene group exists. So fucntionality is 1.
