What is HCF?
Common Factor implies there are two or more numbers
Let’s take two numbers:
12 & 18
Common factors are: 1, 2, 3, 6
And we call 6 as highest common factor of these two numbers and we call it the HCF of these two numbers.
Method to find HCF
Lets take an example:
Find HCF of 24, 36 and 50
Step 1:
Write all numbers in their prime form
24 = 23 x 3
36 = 22 x 32
50 = 2 x 52
Step 2:
Select the least power of each prime :
Least power of 2 = 1
Least power of 3 = 0 (It is 0 because we can write 50 as 2 x 52 x 30. Hence least power of 3 is 0)
Similarly, Least power of 5 = 0
Step 3:
Write HCF as product of all the numbers in step 2.
HCF = 21 x 30 x 50 = 2
What is LCM?
Again, Least Common multiple means two or more number.
Let’s take two numbers as 4 & 5
Multiples of 4 = 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 44 ….
Multiples of 5 = 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, …
Common multiples are: 20, 40, 60, 80, ….
We can see than 20 is the Least common multiples. That is the LCM
Method to find LCM
Let’s take an example:
Find LCF of 24, 36 and 50.
Step 1:
Write them in Prime form
24 = 23 x 3
36 = 22 x 32
50 = 2 x 52
Step 2:
Select the highest power of each prime
Highest power of 2 = 3
Highest power of 3 = 2
Highest power of 5 = 2
Step 3:
Write LCM as product of there number
LCM = 23 x 32 x 52 = 600
This is the most basic method to find LCM and HCF. There are few other methods as well like ladder method, log division method, etc, I feel the method above is foolproof and there is least chance of committing mistakes.
