Potassium chloride is an electrovalent compound, while hydrogen chloride is a covalent compound. But, both conduct electricity in their aqueous solutions. Explain.
In Potassium chloride, the Potassium acts cations K+1 and Chloride acts as anion Cl−1. Becuse of the complete transfer of electrons from potassium ion to chloride ion, so it is an ionic or electrovalent compound.
But in case of HCl there is the presence of covalent bond that is there is the presence of sharing of electrons b/w hydrogen and chlorine.
In aqueous medium ionic compounds dissociate into ions conduct electricity whereas HCl in aqueos acid, it dissociates, it means the aqueous medium dissociates into hydronium and chloride ion due to strong attraction by lone pair of electron of oxygen atom of water. It causes for conduct electricity.
