Question

Potassium superoxide, KO2, is utilised in closed system breathing apparatus. Exhaled air contains CO2 and H2O both of which are removed and the removal of water generates oxygen for breathing by the reaction: 4KO2(s)+2H2O(l)3O2(g)+4KOH(s). The potassium hydroxide removes CO2 from the appratus by the reaction: KOHsw+CO2(g)KHCO3(s).
The mass of KO2 generating 48 g of oxygen is :

Solution

The correct option is D 142 g
4KO2+2H2O3O2+4KOH

4 moles of KO2 3 moles of O2

molar mass of KO2 = 71 g/mol

molar mass of O2 = 32 g/mol

Mass of KO2 = 4×713×32×48 = 142 g

Hence, option A is correct.
