Solution

The correct option is C Eaton agents
  • PPLO is a short version for the Pleuropneumonia-like organism which is responsible for causing atypical pneumonia in humans and other animals.
  • They belong to the mycoplasm group which are bacteria but without cell wall and can survive without oxygen.
  • Earlier in times when patients were discovered with clinical symptoms different from that of the flu and having an infection in their tracheal cavity. The organism causing the disease was not identified and it was simply named as a filterable virus as it was able to pass through the filter used to remove bacteria.
  • Dr Eaton worked on this organism by using infective material from the patient and infected the rats with that. He observed that the rats infected suffered from the same symptoms as dos the humans.
  • Eaton also worked on the antibiotic sensitivity of the organism and discovered that they are sensitive to the drug aureomycin.
  • Till some years the nomenclature of the organism was still in the loop and so it was till then identified as the Eaton agent that causes typical pneumonia.
So the answer "Eaton agent" is correct.
