Below 1350∘C, Mg can reduce Al2O3 and above
1350∘C, Al can reduce MgO. This can be inferred from
ΔG⊖Vs T plots.
ΔG⊖Vs T plot for Mg, MgO is below ΔG⊖Vs T plot for Al. At the point of intersection ( corresponding to 1350∘C), ΔG⊖ for combined reaction is zero. After 1350∘C, Mg, MgO curve is higher than Al Al2O3 curve. There are practical difficulties to attain higher temperature.
