Question

Predict the geometrical shapes of the following molecules and then predict which molecules you would expect to have resultant dipole moments (also refer to sec-dipole moments):
(a) SO2
(b) NH3
(c) H2S
(d) C2H4
(e) SF6
(f) CH2Cl2

Solution

(a) SO2 geometry is Vshaped or bent-shape this is due to a lone pair of electrons on s.
(b) NH3 geometry is trigonal pyramidal.
(c) H2S geometry is a Bent shape.
(d) C2H4 geometry is trigonal planar.
(e) SF6 geometry is octahedral.
(f) CH2Cl2 geometry is tetrahedral this have dipole moment due to the electronegative difference.
