Popoff's rule states that during the oxidation of unsymmetrical ketone, the cleavage of the C─CO bond is done in such a way that the keto group is always with the smaller alkyl group.

Hence, here the C─CO breaks so that the keto group is with the methyl group and leads to formation of acetic acid.
