Question

Predict the sign of delta S for the following changes;

(i) Br2 (g) ---> 2Br (g)
(ii) HCOOH (l) ---> H2O (l) + CO2 (g)
(iii) I2 (s) ---> I2 (g)
(iv) H2 (at 25°C, 1 atm) ---> H2 (at 25°C and 10 atm)
(v) H2O (at 25°C, 1 atm) ---> H2O (at 50°C and 1 atm)

Solution

Entropy simply means randomness... That is scattering..
Now come to yhe problem
1-no of moles in product side is more than in reactant side... That is no of particle in product side is greater than in that of reactants so it is positive
2-product side has got gas... So the entropy is positive
3-
solid is changes to gas... So of course the entropy is increased.... So entropy is positive
4-when pressure is increased... The particles come closer... So entropy decrease... So entropy is negative
5-
when temperature is increased.... Scattering or randomness increases... So entropy is positive
