Tetanus is caused by the bacterium Clostridium tetani which can easily pass into the body through an open wound (even a mild cut).
The incubation period of bacterium is short; hence it is not sufficient to produce antibodies in case the bacterium affects the person.
During the delivery of a newborn, the umbilical cord is cut off.
Therefore, it is very likely that the bacteria may enter the newborn through the umbilical cord.
Hence, pregnant mother should be vaccinated for tetanus to protect both the mother and the baby.
