Preparation of ethers by acid dehydration of secondary or tertiary alcohols is not a suitable method. Give reason.

Ethers are formed as a result of acid dehydration by SN2 mechanism (from primary alcohols). If secondary or tertiary alcohols are used, due to steric hindrance, alkenes are formed and not ethers.
