Solution

The correct option is B formation and maturation of lymphocytes
Immunity is the ability of the body to protect itself against all types of pathogens (e.g., bacteria, viruses, protozoans, etc). Lymphocytes of our body are mainly involved in generating immunological responses in the body.

Lymphocytes are the white blood cells which have a non-granular cytoplasm and can provide immunity against specific foreign substances in the body.

The production, maturation and proliferation of these lymphocytes requires a unique microenvironment which is provided by specialised organs known as lymphoid organs.

Primary lymphoid organs like the bone marrow and the thymus are the sites of origin and maturation of the lymphocytes. All lymphocytes are produced in the bone marrow (soft spongy tissue of the long bones) from special stem cells that can divide and differentiate into all types of blood cells. After synthesis, the maturation of B lymphocytes occurs in the bone marrow itself while the T-lymphocytes mature in the thymus (lobed organ located near the heart and beneath the breastbone).

The secondary lymphoid organs are the sites where the lymphocytes migrate after maturation, interact with antigens (foreign substances that produce an immune response in the body) and proliferate (multiply by cell division and differentiate into various cell types like effector cells and memory cells) to initiate a series of different immunological responses in the body. B- lymphocytes after interacting with antigens, divide and differentiate into plasma cells which produce the antibodies that are specific to antigens.

Lymph is formed when the plasma of the blood containing lymphocytes and antibodies leaks out of capillaries into the intercellular spaces of the tissues. It drains into a separate channel of lymphatic vessels.
