Definition:

  • It is the process of removal / addition of electrons from / to the outermost shell of an isolated gaseous atom to attain stability.
  • Two types of ions are formed- Cations and Anions
  • Ions formed by the removal of electrons the valence shell from an isolated gaseous atom is called Cation.
  • Ions formed by the addition of electrons to the valence shell of an isolated gaseous atom is called Anions.
