Question

PROCESS OF SIMPLE DISTILLATION CAN BE USED TO SEPARATE THE CONSTITUENTS FROM A LIQUID MIXTURE DIFFERING IN THEIR BOILING POINTS BY 25 DEGREES C OR MORE . HOWEVER FRACTIONAL DISTILLATION IS EFFECTIVE IF THE DIFFERENCE IN BOILING POINTS IS LESS THAN 25 DEGREES C . HOW WILL YOU EXPLAIN THIS?

Solution

1. Fractional distillation and simple distillation are almost same process, employ same principle of distillation.

2. Basic difference between the two is that the apparatus in fractional distillation has fractionating column in which glass or plastic beads are present. These beads enable the re-condensation and re-evaporation of less volatile liquid in the solution and high volatile liquid escapes into upper level and condenses faster.

3. Thus, in fractional distillation liquids with any difference in boiling points can be separated while in simple distillation the boiling point difference should be more that 25 degrees.
