First reaction is retro aldol reaction. It is a reverse of aldol reaction.
Initially the strong base will abstract the acidic proton from the OH and forms a keto group which leads to CC bond breakage to form carbanion followed by proton abstraction.


Formed acetaldehyde undergoes cross aldol reaction with formaldehyde. The substrate are in 3:1 (HCHO:CH3CHO) ratio which will induce the mutiple enolate formation and corresponding aldol formations.
