Let the smaller number be x, then the larger number will be x+1.

Given that their product is 56.

x(x+1)=56x2+x56=0x2+x+(12)2(12)256=0x2+(2×12)x+(12)2(14+56)=0(x+12)22254=0(x+12)2=2254x+12=±152x=±15212

x=15212, 15212

x=7,8

Since it is given that both are natural numbers, the value of x cannot be negative.

The smaller number is 7.
