Progesterone causes changes in the endometrium. The constantly increased levels of progesterone disrupt the normal hormonal cycle and induce thinning of the endometrium and atrophy of the endometrial glands. There is a simultaneous thickening of cervical mucous which makes it difficult for sperm to enter the cervical canal. The progesterone adversely affects sperm survival and implantation in the improbable event that a sperm manages to fertilize an egg.
