Solution

Curd and antibiotics production
  • Curd is prepared from milk by Lactobacillus. It ferments the milk and produces lactic acid, which reduces the pH of milk to form curd.
  • Antibiotics are secondary metabolites produced by some bacteria such as Streptomyces. They are used as medicine.

Heterotrophic bacteria
  • Heterotrophic bacteria utilises organic carbon sources to produce energy. They do not synthesise their own food but depend on these organic molecules (also known as substrate) for their food.
  • Lactobacillus and Streptomyces are heterotrophs that utilise simple sugars such as lactose and glucose as their carbon source respectively.
