Unique features of carbon :

Catenation property: The ability of an atom to join with the other atom of same element and form long chains is called Catenation. carbon is an element which shows maximum cantenation.
Multiple bond formation: Due to the presence of four unpaired electrons in the valence shell of the carbon atom in it's excited state, there is a possibility of double and triple bond between carbon atoms.This ability to form multiple bonds also give rise to form various carbon chains.
Such compounds with identical molecular formula but different structures are called structural isomers.
