Question

Prove that 3+5 is irrational

Open in App
Solution

Let us assume that 3+5 is a rational number.

So, it can be written in the form ab
3+5=ab

Here a and b are coprime numbers and b0

Solving 3+5=ab we get,
5=ab-3
5=a-3bb
5=a-3bb

This shows a-3bb is a rational number. But we know that 5 is an irrational number.

So, it contradicts our assumption. Our assumption of 3+5 is a rational number is incorrect.

3+5 is an irrational number

Hence, it is proved that 3+5 is irrational.
