Prove that n12×n23×n31=1
where n12 is the refractive index of medium-2 with respect to medium-1, n23 is the refractive index of medium-3 with respect to medium-2, n31 is the refractive index of medium-3 with respect to medium-1.

From the definition the relative refractive index we know, n12=n2n1, where n12 is the refractive index of medium-2 with respect to medium-1, n1 and n2 are absolute refractive indices of medium-1 and 2 respectively.
Similarly, n23=n3n2 and n31=n1n3
Now , n12×n23×n31=n2n1×n3n2×n1n3=1 (PROVED)
