Solution

Instructions:
First, we need to know what political party is. We shall also discuss about national and regional parties
After we answer that, we need to discuss how political parties form a connection between elected representatives and people.

Solution:
Political parties are a group of organised people who share the same ideology. These parties compete in elections based on their ideology, to form a government. National parties are powerful in the nation, they deal with national issues. National parties are political parties which participate in different elections all over India. They have an exclusive symbol throughout the country.Let us look at the criteria required for a party to become a national party. A national party should have at least 6% of the vote in 4 or more states in the earlier Lok Sabha or state assembly elections. In case of failure of first criteria, the party needs to secure at least 2% of total Lok Sabha constituencies. In case, both criteria fail, they need to be recognised as a state party in any 4 states to be considered as a national party.

Example – Bharatiya Janata Party, Indian National Congress and more.

Regional political parties compete to form governments at the national and state level. These parties are proud of their respective regional identity and work towards regional development. The working of regional political parties, highlights the federal nature of Indian democracy.

In recent years, the influence of regional political parties in mainstream politics has also increased.

For example - Shiv Sena, Assam Gana Parishad, and Telugu Desham.

Let’s now see how the representatives are connected to the voters through political parties.
  • Common people cannot directly take part or get involved in the affairs of the government, so to have their representation or indirect involvement, people have to send their elected representative.
  • This elected representative is implicitly or explicitly related to one or the other political party.
  • The political party chooses one of its eminent members to stand for election whom people caste vote and send to take part in the affairs of government as their representative.
So, it is quite evident that political parties are the link between the elected representative and people.
