Question

Prove that the area of a trapezium ABCD =12× (sum of parallel sides) × distance between parallel sides.

Open in App
Solution

Draw DF and CE perpendiculars from D and C on AB.
Area of a trapezium ABCD = area ( DFA) + area (rectangle DFEC) + area ( CEB)

=(12×AF×DF)+(FE×DF)+(12×EB×CE)

=(12×AF×h)+(FE×h)+(12×EB×h)

=12×h×(AF+2FE+EB)

=12×h×(AF+FE+EB+FE)

=12×h×(AB+FE)

=12×h×(AB+DC) square units.

=12× (sum of parallel sides) × (distance between them)
