Respiration:

  1. In cells, the carbon bonds of complex compounds will break down and it will release energy and this process is called respiration.
  2. The processes of respiration take place both in cytoplasm and mitochondria.

Mitochondria:

  1. Mitochondria are spherical or rod-shaped and double membranous structures present in all cells.
  2. Mitochondria are considered as the powerhouse of cells because they produce cellular energy (ATP) for all life activities.
  3. The inner membrane of mitochondria are folded to increase surface area thus respiration rate gets increased.
  4. The peroxisomes on the inner folds of mitochondria provide space for the attachment of glucose molecules for the oxidation process and produce ATP.
