Dear student
The electronic configuration and the valency of the following atoms:
(a) Sodium (atomic number 11), EC- 2,8,1 and valency is +1 as it will lose 1 electron to attain stability
(b) Phosphorous (atomic number 15), EC- 2,8,5 and valency is -3 as it will gain 3 electrons to attain stability
(c)Sulphur (atomic number 16), EC- 2,8,6 and valency is -2 as it will gain 2 electrons to attain stability
(d)Argon (atomic number 18), EC- 2,8,8 and valency is 0 as it is inert gas
(e)Zinc (atomic number 30), EC- 2,8,18,2 and valency is +2 as it will loose 2 electrons to attain stability
(f)Krypton (atomic number 36), EC- 2,8,18,8 and valency is 0 as it is inert gas
The valency of an element is the number of electrons lost or gained by the neutral atom of an element to attain stability or to attain nearest noble gas electronic configuration.
