Explanation:

  • Komagata Maru Incident: This incident happened in the year of 1914 when a ship called Komagata Maru carrying British Subjects was forced to turn back from Vancouver, Canada. As the ship returned to Calcutta, the police in Budge-Budge were forcing those on the ship to board a train to Punjab. When these people refused to board, the confrontation turned violent, and firing happened in which 19 of the passengers died. In May 2016, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau apologized for the incident.
  • Lucknow Pact happened in December 1916 in which an agreement was reached between the Indian National Congress and the Muslim League at a joint session of both the parties held in Lucknow. Through the pact, the two parties agreed to allow representation to religious minorities in the provincial legislatures.

On 20th August 1917, Montagu presented the historic Montagu Declaration (August Declaration) in the British Parliament. This declaration proposed the increased participation of Indians in the administration and the development of self-governing institutions in India.
