Solution

The correct option is A 1 only

Explanation:

Statement 1 is correct: In September 1920: At a special session in Calcutta presided over by Lala Lajpat rai, convened to decide the future of the movement.

Statement 2 is incorrect: Congress approved a non-cooperation programme introduced by Gandhi till the Punjab & Khilafat wrongs were removed & swaraj was established.

  • The programme was to include:
    • Boycott of government schools & colleges;
    • Boycott of law courts & dispensation of justice through panchayats instead;
    • Boycott of Legislative Councils;
    • Boycott of foreign cloth & use of khadi instead; also practice of hand-spinning to be done;
    • Renunciation of government honors & titles;
  • The second phase could include mass civil disobedience including resignation from government service, & non-payment of taxes. The Civil Disobedience Movement was an attempt at paralysing the administration by breaking some specific rules and regulations while the Non-Cooperation Movement sought to bring the working of the government to a standstill by not cooperating with the administration.
  • During the movement, the participants were supposed to work for Hindu-Muslim unity & for removal of untouchability, all the time remaining non-violent.
