Solution

The correct option is C Both 1 and 2

Explanation:

Statement 1 is correct: Commercialisation of agriculture lead to the proliferation of cultivation of cash crops -which often lead to the emergence of exploitative money lenders and debt traps. Due to the linkage to the world market sometimes Indian cultivators have to take the demand shocks -in the wake of the insensitive colonial government and exploitative middlemen. Cotton fetched high prices during the American civil war which led many peasants to cultivate cotton. But prices slumped once the American civil war was over. Other causes of revolt were:

  • Bad harvest of 1875.
  • Increase of revenue by 50% by the British government.
  • Charging of exorbitant rates of interest by moneylenders (who were mostly Marwaris).

Statement 2 is correct: The Deccan peasants' uprising was directed mainly against the excesses of the Marwari and Gujarati money lenders. The ryots suffered heavy taxation under the Ryotwari system. The land revenue was also raised by 50% in 1867.
