Question

Q. Give example of each: (i) Ionic hydride (ii) Covalent hydride (iii) Metallic hydride

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student

Hydrogen bonds with alkali or alkaline earth metals leads to strong ionic bonds where H is present as hydride (with hydrogen having oxidation state -1) . These are called ionic hydrides. Eg : NaH , CaH2

When H and one or more non-metal forms compound, it is called covalent hydride. Eg : HCl , NH3

Hydrogen bond with transition metal form metallic or interstitial hydrides. Eg: AlH3, H2Ni
