Dear student,
Balkan tensions were responsible for the outbreak of the First World War:
a. The Balkans was a diverse region with geographical and ethnic variation which comprised modern-day Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, Greece, Macedonia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Slovenia, Serbia and Montenegro whose inmates were known as the Slavs.
b. As the different Slavic nationalities were focussing on getting their identity and independence, the Balkan area became an area of intense conflict and tension.
c. The Balkan states were envious of each other and aimed to gain more territory at the expense of the others.
d. Matters worsened because the Balkans came up as the picture of big power rivalry.
d. Each power – Russia, Germany, England, Austro-Hungary – was on a race to catch hold of other powers
over the Balkans, and expanding its own control over the area. This eventually led to the First World War.
Regards.
