If there are 2 teams (say A, and B) in the group, and each team play each other exactly once $\to$ there will only be 1 match $\left(AvB\right)\to 1$

If there are 3 teams (A, B, and C), and each team plays against each other once $\to$ There will be 3 matches $(AvB,BvC,AvC)\to 1+2$

If there are 4 teams (A, B, C, and D), and each team plays against each other once $\to$ There will be 6 matches $\to 1+2+3$

In general $\to$ No. of matches in group is there are n teams $\to 1+2+3+...+(n-1)=\frac{n(n-1)}{2}$
