Q) Mercury is a liquid and conducts electricity . Do you think it is an electrolyte?( Hint : Mercury is a metal that is a liquid at room temperature)

Ans) No, though mercury is a liquid at room temperature it is a metal . It cannot be an electrolyte. This is because most of the liquids that can conduct electricity or acids bases and salts whereas mercury is a metal.

Example: soluble salts, acids and bases, some gases, such as hydrogen chloride, under conditions of high temperature or low pressure are electrolytes when dissolved in suitable ionizing solvents such as water .
