Recently the Chilika Development Authority (CDA) has designated the Fishing Cat as ambassador of Chilika Lake, Odisha. It is a step towards conservation of this feline species. They are nocturnal animals which prey on fish, frogs, crustaceans, snakes, birds and scavenges on carcasses of larger animals. Their main habitats are Wetlands and hence they are mainly found in the mangrove forests of the Sundarbans, around Chilika Lake, foothills of the Himalayas along Ganga and Brahmaputra river valleys and in the Western Ghats.

They are classified as Endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Threats faced by Fishing cats include Habitat loss due to development activities in wetlands; Intensive aquaculture; hunting for meat and skin etc. It was also declared as the State Animal of West Bengal in 2012.
