The Danube-Oder-Elbe canal intends to connect the three rivers Danube, Oder and Elbe. This will provide an alternate route of navigation from Black Sea to Baltic Sea and North seas. “This major project, costing at least 23 billion euros, fundamentally violates EU environmental and nature conservation directives. The project envisages constructing Several hundred kilometres of artificial waterways, hundreds of locks to lift the ships at high altitude and also tunnels are considered.

The acceleration of flood waves resulting from the construction of numerous locks, and canalised and deepened riverbeds is expected to diminish flood protection and increase flood risks further. The canal could also result in a great loss of biodiversity, as the areas where the canal is to be built, offer a safe haven to Europe's most valuable and threatened species and habitats, for birds as well as other animal and plant species. So, therefore several environmental organizations have raised concerns against the construction of the canal as it will increase risks of flooding. They called on the European Commission to ensure that the project be excluded from EU funding, and not be included as part of the Trans-European Transport Network.
